Short Story Writing

Course Outline

As the saying goes, it may be that everyone has a novel in them waiting to be written, but sometimes it’s better – and more rewarding – to start small. This four-week course, by author and journalist Elaine Collins, will help you bring your short story ideas to the page in a fun, friendly and informal way. You’ll look at different types of storytelling, character descriptions, research, editing and more, with plenty of writing exercises and prompts along the way.

No previous experience necessary – just bring yourself (and a pen and paper!)

About the Tutor

Elaine Collins has been a journalist and editor for over 35 years. She’s worked on national newspapers and magazines both here and in the UK, writing ‘everything fiction’ in her spare time. She’s had many fiction stories published in magazines and books worldwide, and set up her own company, South SEAS Publishing, several years’ ago. Through this, she’s published several books including a children’s range, co-written with her daughter. This series has proved particularly successful and is available in national libraries and used by teachers in primary schools. Elaine lives on the leafy upper North Shore of Sydney with her husband, two children and a menagerie of pets!
